About

“Write drunk; edit sober,” Ernest Hemingway once quipped.

Though I admire Papa’s sage words, I’d like to route Hemingway’s advice in a new direction.

What is drunk?

Sure, it means to be intoxicated—but by what? To be drunk is to be overcome: to be dominated by a strong feeling, a strong emotion—not necessarily a strong drink.

What is sober?

The opposite. Sobriety is a sense of rationality. To be sober is to be serious, to be sensible.

To write drunk and edit sober, then, is to write both with the heart and the mind—a worthy aspiration for any writer.

With that, let’s have a toast: to writing drunk, editing sober, and finding happiness in this thing called life.
